Are we required to exchange rings at a civil ceremony?

My boyfriend and I are getting married next week in a civil ceremony at city hall. We don't have rings to exchange. Are rings required for a civil ceremony? We'd rather save the money and put it towards the house we're buying.

  1. No, you aren't required to have rings to become legally married. The rings are part of the "ceremony" aspect, not part of the "legal" aspect. They are a symbol. If you'd rather save your money, then save it :) Likewise I know couples who have just bought $9 sterling silver bands.
  2. Rings are never required even at a religious ceremony. If you don't want them, don't include them.
  3. not required at all. the only thing that is required is a judge, and you both agreeing..lol. your marriage is completely up to you. good for you for thinking logically and of the future
  4. Hey, you can shake hands and part company and return to your desks on the 5th floor if you want. ...the words, the witnesses, the papers and he authority, and its done.
  5. Nope, but you are required to say/repeat/consent to the vows. That's the only mandatory part of the ceremony.
  6. Rings are not required. The legal requirements should be outlined in the paperwork you got when you applied for your marriage license; everything else is optional.
  7. Rings are never required. They are merely and outward "expression" of your marriage. My ex could not wear one because of his job - electrical wires. zzzztt He had an employee whose religion discouraged the wearing of wedding rings because it could be seen as a symbol of status.... weddings were casual ceremonies at the church... no big fancy gowns, etc.. very simple and humble.
