Why do you think people say wedding vows?

I am writing my wedding ceremony and trying to explain the importance, the reason behind a bride and groom saying personalized vows to one another. What do you think the reason is we say vows?

2. I actually think most people say them because that is traditional-and that's it. Even if they do wish to remain married forever, they say them because they are the things their religion/tradition tell them to say.
3. Wedding vows is usually words from the heart..........
4. As an officiant I love it when the couple writes the vows because it gives them (the vows) even more meaning. With the weddings I have done, especially when the couple writes the vows, it seems to be the point where the reality of the marriage really starts to sink in, in a good way.
5. For us, our vows are a covenant between me, my fiance and God. Some people say them because they are tradition but the vows should be your public statement of intention and they should be upheld throughout your marriage, whether you write them yourself or us the more traditional ones.
6. It's their promise to the other person, so it should be something heartfelt and even if my brides go with somethign prepared, it still needs to reflect their feelings. I completely agree with the Red Cleric about meaningful vows sinking in.
7. Because sometimes we get so busy in our lives that sometimes we don't get a chance to speak from our hearts and it makes your marriage stronger knowing what you mean to one another. Plus I so would have done vows, I regret not doing them the guy we had that married us kept going on for about 30 min on how I should please my husband....I have a picture of my dad laughing and my step mom had a horrified look on her face when the guy was saying this.
8. The vows in any type of wedding ceremony are the most important aspect of the whole day for you are making promises to your spouse in front of everyone, thereby solidifying your union as a married couple. They also make your spouse’s day more memorable especially if from the heart. You can get professionals to write them for you too.
